As the ‘Satluj’ controversy continues to dominate Punjab's politics, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has repeatedly invoked the wounds of the militancy era, while former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh has warned that reopening history only risks polarising the present and may ultimately benefit parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal, ‘Waris Punjab De’ and Akali Dal (Punar Surjit). Three decades after Punjab paid an enormous price for violence and division, should political leaders be healing the memories of that era, or are they once again discovering that the easiest path to power lies in awakening old fears, old identities and old wounds rather than offering new hope for Punjab's future ?

ਜਿਵੇਂ-ਜਿਵੇਂ ‘ਸਤਲੁਜ’ ਵਿਵਾਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਸਤ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਰਵਨੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿੱਟੂ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਖਾੜਕੂਵਾਦ ਦੇ ਦੌਰ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਸਾਬਕਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਕੈਪਟਨ ਅਮਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਣ ਨਾਲ ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹੀ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਲਾਭ ਆਖ਼ਰਕਾਰ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ, ‘ਵਾਰਿਸ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ’ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ (ਪੁਨਰ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ) ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਧਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਿੰਨ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਅਤੇ ਵੰਡ ਦੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਚੁਕਾਈ ਸੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ, ਕੀ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜਾਂ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਸੱਤਾ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸੋਖਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਡਰ, ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਪਛਾਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਭ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਨਵੀਂ ਉਮੀਦ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ?
