Punjab has an estimated 50–60 Lakhs NRIs worldwide, including nearly 12 Lakhs in Canada, 7 Lakhs in the UK, 2.5 Lakhs in the US, 2.3 Lakhs in Australia, and 2 Lakhs in Italy. Beyond sending remittances, the Punjabi diaspora shapes public opinion, supports political campaigns, and influences voters back home. The AAP Government claims to have resolved 25,870 of 26,828 NRI complaints through regular NRI Milnis, while critics question the delivery and point to unresolved issues such as illegal immigration, deported Punjabis, and property disputes. As Punjab heads towards 2027, one question becomes unavoidable: Is Punjab's global diaspora being treated as partners in development, or as a political vote bank beyond its borders ? What should define Punjab's engagement with its global diaspora ?
